Doris Secures Spot in Irish Selection But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad selection update

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall Tests, however Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".

After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team host Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said Farrell, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield choices. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.
