Transgender filmmaker Sam Feder's recent feature "Heightened Scrutiny" offers a compelling two-part perspective – simultaneously an emotional profile of a prominent transgender activist and a sharp examination of journalistic reporting about transgender existence.

Legal Battle at the Highest Court

This documentary documents ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he gets ready for oral arguments in the significant highest court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle occurred in late 2024, with the judiciary ultimately ruling in favor of the state's position, effectively allowing bans on treatment for transgender youth to remain in effect across multiple US states.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in only 16 months, shared Feder during a discussion. By contrast, my previous film Disclosure took me five years, so this was very accelerated. Our purpose was to stimulate discussion so people would know more about the case.

Human Story Amid Political Struggle

Although Feder offers a extensive examination of how major news organizations have promoted anti-trans narratives, the film's greatest contribution may be its compelling portrayal of Strangio. Normally a reserved attorney in media appearances, Strangio reveals his humanity throughout the film.

That was a major challenge, to open up parts of my life to a filmmaker that I had made efforts to keep personal, stated Strangio. Feder explained he wanted the next generation to know that we struggled, to see what was done in defense of these fights for our basic existence.

Varied Voices in the Movement

To support Strangio's account, Feder includes various transgender voices, including prominent figures from media and entertainment. This film also includes viewpoints from non-trans supporters who critique how mainstream publications have added to negative reporting of trans people.

The perspective of transgender minors central to the court battle is represented through a remarkable young activist named Mila. Audiences observe her fighting for her fellow students at a educational meeting, with subsequent moments showing her speaking for trans rights outside the highest court.

Personal Moments Beyond the Legal Battle

This film also contains emotional moments where Feder moves beyond the ongoing political struggle, such as sequences of Strangio vacationing in Italy and getting a body art featuring lines from civil rights leader Pauli Murray's poem "Prediction."

This ink moment is among my preferred parts in the movie, stated Strangio. Getting inked is nearly like a reflective process for me, to be fully present in my body and to consider it as a vessel for things that are important to me.

Body Identity and Portrayal

Feder's attention to carefully showing Strangio adding to his tattoo collection underscores that this film is essentially about trans physical selves – not only those of young people who face prohibition of their right to live truly in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the numerous participants who participate in the film.

I create films with a message, and part of that is selecting people who are brilliant and eloquent enough to hold the camera, explained Feder. When people ask me what they should dress for an filming, my answer is anything that makes you feel confident. This is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we have difficulties so much with our appearance.

Impact and Optimism

A key element that causes Feder's documentaries shine is his obvious talent for making his transgender participants feel comfortable, seen and appreciated. This technique creates real rapport between Feder and Strangio, allowing the director to achieve his aim of presenting Strangio as a multifaceted person and providing a testament for posterity of how persistently he and others have campaigned for trans rights.

I hope not people to find themselves in a place of perpetual discouragement because of what the law is denying us, stated Strangio. I strive to be in a process of using the law to lessen harm, but not to turn it into some sort of pathway for our liberatory aspirations. State bodies is not going to be the reflection through which we view ourselves. Trans people are that reflection, and it's extremely vital that we persist having that conversation together with conversations about resisting these laws and approaches.
