The Two Fatalities Identified in the Providence Campus Attack as Police Press On With Manhunt for Gunman.
Two students who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their killer carried on following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person of interest in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.
Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow online, stating: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, according to relatives.
His name was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.
The Shooting Incident
Nine other people were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Law enforcement reported late Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a search at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”
Ongoing Concerns
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate new worry for our community”.
The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a authority told the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that searched the hotel found two handguns and two ammunition clips when the individual was arrested, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured
Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was allowed to go home, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.
A private school, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
More Condolences
Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his promising future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to data. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
