United Kingdom Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Warning Roster with Eleven Destinations
The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further destinations to its travel advisory roster regarding the threats of methanol contamination from adulterated spirits.
This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of methanol poisoning.
Just recently, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after multiple serious incidents like the deadly demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can result in vision loss or death within 12–48 hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not designed for ingestion.
While it is generated during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.
Yet in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.
Government Recommendations for Tourists
Authorities minister a senior official stated that all travellers should recognize the signs of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the official warned.
"If something seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's way worse than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The full roster of destinations noted as posing a risk of industrial alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
